For over three decades, Finegold Alexander has partnered with Jewish congregations across the country, helping to shape spiritual homes that are much more than just places of worship—they are the heart of Jewish community life. With a profound understanding of the religious, aspirational, and technical needs of synagogue design, our approach has always been rooted in collaboration, ensuring each project reflects the congregation's unique vision and values.

One such example is B’nai Jehoshua Beth Elohim’s new synagogue in Deerfield Illinois, where the design centers on creating a welcoming “village center” that connects all spaces of the synagogue, including the sanctuary, social hall, administration, chapel, contemplation room, and early learning center. This inclusive layout mirrors the Jewish principle of Tikkun Olam (repairing the world) through sustainable building practices, the use of natural daylight, and reusing existing structures where possible. The design accommodates both intimate and large gatherings, with flexible worship spaces that hold between 10 and 1,200 people.

A crucial and deeply symbolic element of synagogue design is the placement of the Ner Tamid, or “eternal flame.” Located above the Holy Ark, the Ner Tamid holds spiritual significance as a reminder of God’s eternal presence. Inspired by averse in Exodus, which calls for an eternal flame to burn on the golden menorah in the Holy Temple, the Ner Tamid embodies the connection between tradition and modern design.

Through thoughtful collaboration with BJBE’s clergy, congregation, and a team of engineers and artists, Finegold Alexander helped craft a space where both the building and its sacred elements honor the rich spiritual and cultural heritage of the community.
