In celebration of Preservation Month, we sat down with Senior Associate and Senior Project Manager Rob Law to discuss his experience at Lower Basin Barracks.

This ambitious project revitalized the former Charles River Lower Locks gatehouse that had fallen into disrepair, honoring its rich history while optimizing site design for public benefit The collaboration with key stakeholders—including the Division of Capital Asset Management and Maintenance (DCAMM), the Massachusetts State Police (MSP), the Division of Conservation and Recreation (DCR), and the broader public—highlights the inclusive, community-focused approach adopted by the project team. The recent expansion features a thoughtfully designed public lobby that seamlessly integrates with the original historic façade, providing access to public restrooms and a versatile community/conference room. The preserved exterior masonry door openings are now focal points connecting the new addition to the existing building along the main corridor, which showcases photography of the original historic structure. Additionally, the original cast iron Charles River Basin (CRB) transom grilles were meticulously restored to their original condition.
