In celebration of Preservation Month, we are excited to share some unique stories about our firm's preservation projects. One such project is Boston University's Kilachand Hall, formerly known as Shelton Hall and, before that, the Hotel Sheraton.
We spoke with Finegold Alexander Associate and Senior Project Manager Steve Walnut about his work on this iconic building. Kilachand Hall, one of eight dormitories at Boston University, was originally constructed in 1923 by the Bay State Road Company as one of the first Sheraton hotels. Its top floor, with its stunning views, served as a ballroom and social space, frequently hosting jazz bands. In 1950,the building was purchased and renamed the Hotel Shelton.
Finegold Alexander undertook the renovation and reconstruction of Kilachand Hall, now home to BU’s Kilachand Honors College. The reconstruction of the 9th floor’s systems and envelope was designed to exceed energy code requirements, and the project has achieved LEED Gold certification. During the construction phase, Steve Walnut discovered a hidden gem that provided fascinating insights into the building's history. Can you guess what it might be?
