At Finegold Alexander, improving existing building performance is a key focus of our decarbonization efforts. The global existing building stock contributes significant amounts of CO2 each year. Our priority is to first reduce heating and cooling loads by improving the envelope. This strategy can greatly reduce energy usage and improve indoor air quality and comfort.
FA Energy Manager, Megan Brown, shared her insights on using the FLIR camera and its advantages in evaluating existing buildings. She explained that thermal imagery measures radiant heat on the surface of an object, helping identify deficiencies in insulation, thermal bridging, and areas where heat is escaping through assemblies like walls and windows. Existing buildings often have hidden issues, and thermography allows us to pinpoint problem areas, reducing costs and scope for building owners.
