Finegold Alexander is proud to highlight the Christa McAuliffe Branch Library. This transformative space was designed to embody the spirit and legacy of Christa McAuliffe, the educator-astronaut whose life was tragically cut short in the Challenger space shuttle disaster. Inspired by her passion for teaching and exploration, Finegold Alexander designed this 21st-century library to be a beacon of knowledge, community, and learning.

The library’s design features a soaring roof shaped like a wing, symbolizing McAuliffe’s pioneering spirit. This architectural gesture lifts above the main reading areas for adults and children, creating a light-filled, open environment that invites discovery and engagement. In front of this dynamic space, a lower structure defines the main entry and houses offices, meeting rooms, and spaces for young adults, offering a flexible layout that adapts to the evolving needs of its community.

“The idea, from the get-go, that the whole committee bought into was trying to be inspired by her. I think one of her most famous quotes is ‘reaching for the stars’, and the idea of reaching for the stars was the impetus to say we should be inspired.”
      - Tony Hsiao, Finegold Alexander, Principal

The new Christa McAuliffe Branch has tripled the size of the previous building, transforming it into a vibrant community center. Daylit spaces, infused with state-of-the-art technology, enhance the library’s mission of engagement, providing patrons with tools for learning and connection. Whether it's quiet reading, collaborative work, or community events, the library’s versatile design caters to all.

“It has been such a gift to the community, especially people in the north side, ever since it opened. It was immediately popular and even today you can see that there are people all over the building doing many things.”
      - Ruth S. Winett, Framingham Public Library, Board of Trustees Chair

Perched at the highest point of its natural wooded site, the building embraces a sustainable, green approach, earning a LEED Silver award. It reflects how libraries today serve as more than just places for books; they are essential community hubs, accessible to all, and equipped for the future.

The Christa McAuliffe Branch Library is not only a tribute to an extraordinary educator, but it also represents the next generation of library design, where innovation and sustainability meet the timeless quest for knowledge.
