Finegold Alexander was commissioned to adapt the “Old Gym,” a Georgian-style building, into a lively campus center. The goal was to create a dynamic environment for teaching, exhibition, rehearsal, and social interaction. Program elements for the campus center included classrooms, rehearsal space, art studios, exhibition areas, a snack bar, student activity offices and a bookstore. The program was resolved by interflooring the gym to create many studios. The swimming pool’s empty volume was adapted into an accessible multi level Student Center. A bridge across the pool invites participation as students move towards the new athletic complex.
