Project Details
U.S. Post Office and Courthouse
This project on the harbor at the edge of Old San Juan, is composed of two distinct but connected buildings. It encompasses the restoration and reconfiguration of the original Beaux Arts/Spanish Revival style courthouse built in 1914, and an Art Deco high-rise addition completed in 1940. The buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, but were mainly abandoned by 1990. Working with the General Services Administration and Historic Preservation Offices in Puerto Rico and Washington, DC, Finegold Alexander renovated the US Post Office and Courthouse to accommodate both the US Courts program and Design Guidelines, and to meet historic preservation standards. The program called for the complete restoration and modernization of the buildings to house 113,000 sf for the US Court of Appeals, US District Court, US Bankruptcy Court, US Post Office and US Marshals. Historic details and patterns were utilized in the restoration of the Court and other courtrooms.
